Wed, 22/02/2006 - 16:51 — adminThe first phase of the Connect And project includes obtaining the signal in the some squares of the country. This project encompasses all the initiatives regarding the installation of wireless Internet access points in city areas and public spaces. Connect And is an OIE effort, in collaboration with STA, which stems from an intention to provide public service and promote the use of new technologies within the population.
This service is now available at five squares:
- Square Coprínceps in Escaldes-Engordany,
- Square of Poble in Andorra la Vella,
- Square of Germandat in Sant Julià de Lòria,
- Square of Arínsols in Encamp
- Square of Carlemany in Canillo.
The Ordino and La Massana comuns have already submitted their requests to join this initiative. It has been agreed that their services shall be installed when the work at the locations designated by the local corporations have been completed.
Thus, each parish will have its own connection area. The comuns participating in the project have authorised the installation of this equipment, thus providing a free service to residents and visitors.
This initiative falls under the Andorran Government policy to modernise and diversify the national economy, as well as expand into new activity sectors unrepresented nowadays. One key factor in successfully meeting the challenges regarding economic renewal is the support for the implementation and the promotion of new technologies among the citizens and the businesses.
During the next phase of the project, the OIE and STA plan to analyse the installation of the new hotspots, as these wireless points are called, in other places throughout the country. However, the new locations must be public places where a Wi-Fi system would play a useful and practical role.
